Part 1: Supermotocross
The goal of dialing in nutrition is simple. To make your peak performance both repeatable and sustainable.
Through firsthand experience with some of the highest-level athletes in SuperMotocross, it has become clear that there is a significant gap in both knowledge and application when it comes to nutrition. Despite the physical demands of the sport, many athletes underestimate how critical proper fueling is to performing at their maximum potential. Especially over extended periods of time.
While this discussion is specific to SuperMotocross, the underlying principles of nutrition apply broadly across all high-level endurance sports. At its core, performance is dictated by how effectively the body is fueled, utilized, and recovered.
The reality is that many motocross athletes lack a fundamental understanding of how food is used within the body before, during, and after exercise. This gap represents a major limitation, not only in race-day performance, but in training adaptation, recovery, and long-term athlete development.
An athlete’s fuel source is entirely dependent on what they put into their body. In a sport where riders are consistently demanding high outputs, day after day, without a structured approach to fueling and recovery, they risk operating in a constant state of depletion. This can lead to increased fatigue, higher injury risk, impaired recovery, and ultimately burnout.
Nutrition is not just a supporting factor, it is a primary driver of performance, consistency, and longevity in the sport.
Day to Day Nutrition Demands
To better understand the demands, consider a developing athlete training at a motocross facility. A typical weekly schedule may include:
- Riding: 2–4 sessions per week
- Strength training: 2–3 sessions per week
- Cardiovascular training: 2–4 hours of steady-state work per week
Based on this workload, daily energy expenditure can reasonably range from 3,000 to 4,000 calories per day, totaling up to ~25,000 calories per week on the higher end.
A significant portion of this energy demand is driven by carbohydrates, which serve as the primary fuel source for high-intensity and endurance based efforts. Fats contribute to lower-intensity energy demands, while protein plays a critical role in recovery, repair, and adaptation.
Maintaining energy balance, matching caloric intake with expenditure, is challenging in itself. Doing so with high quality, performance supporting food sources requires an even higher level of awareness and discipline.
Younger athletes often rely on convenience and appetite to guide their nutrition, which may be sufficient in early stages. However, as athletes progress through the ranks, and as metabolic efficiency, training demands, and recovery needs evolve, it becomes increasingly important to adopt a more structured and intentional approach to nutrition.
Particularly in the 18–25 age range, where training loads intensify and long-term performance becomes a priority, understanding what to eat, when to eat, and why it matters is essential. Developing a sustainable, individualized nutrition strategy is a key step toward unlocking consistent, high-level performance.
